Gina was rescued, but Max blamed himself for her attack. He fell hard for the beautiful, brave Gina and was devasted when she was raped and beaten by the hijackers. In the book Over the Edge, Max met Gina Vitagliano while she was held hostage on a hijacked plane. This begins the legend of Max Bhagat, cold, efficient, perfect, and a leader whose team will follow him into hell wearing gasoline suits. Normally Max wears plain white briefs, but that morning he had put on some rhinestone bikini briefs (gift of an ex-girlfriend), and rather than take any teasing, he goes in commando, and quickly defuses the situation. And when I say unarmed, I mean buck naked. The team leader wants to kill the robber since he will not answer the phone, but Max realizes that the robber is deaf and can’t hear the phone ringing, so he goes in unarmed to negotiate. The opening chapter takes place in 1986 and features young and brash Max Bhagat during a stand-off at a bank robbery. On the whole I enjoyed the book, but a few pin-pricks kept it from being as strong an entry as some of the other titles in this long-running series. Jules Cassidy is in the story too, still pining from his break-up with Robin from Hot Target. Suzanne Brockmann gets Max Bhagat and Gina Vitagliano together in Breaking Point, and ties up some loose ends with Molly and Jones. 5/21/2023 0 Comments Girl Code by Jess Bryantguilty of two violations of Nevada Revised Statute 630.304(1). When they succeed, the garden they finally enter is no Eden, but rather a massive landscape of machines, geometric forms and all manner of nonorganic objects. A Walk Through Yuichi Yokoyama’s GARDEN with Tom Van Deusen Paul Tumey JSeattle cartoonist Tom Van Deusen and I recently sat down and had a focused discussion about Garden, the 300-page comic book by Tokyo painter and manga artist Yuichi Yokoyama that was published in 2011 by PictureBox. "A group of friends is attempting to enter a garden just beyond a wall. 5/21/2023 0 Comments PLUTO by Naoki UrasawaThe series is being produced by Genco and animated by Studio M2. The series is supervised by Macoto Tezka, Tezuka’s son (no typo - “Tezka” is the chosen romanization), in cooperation with Tezuka Productions. Pluto is a 2003 manga series written and illustrated by Naoki Urasawa and published by Shogakukan. Most of the Pluto anime sneak peek trailer focuses on Gesicht, though the trailer consciously forgoes voice acting and sound effects in favor of just presenting a vibe. The story follows Gesicht, an android detective who works for Europol and is trying to solve a case of global serial killing - and the culprit seems to be another robot. And what an adaptation it is, being a soulful crime noir involving androids and international politics. Pluto was conceived as a murder mystery featuring the German detective-robot Gesicht, one of The Greatest Robot on Earth’s secondary characters, as the series’ protagonist. The Pluto manga is itself a more realistic, grounded adaptation of one of the most famous Astro Boy stories, “The Greatest Robot on Earth,” created by the “God of Manga” himself, Osamu Tezuka. Netflix has revealed a lengthy, atmospheric “sneak peek” trailer for its Pluto anime, based on the phenomenal manga illustrated by Naoki Urasawa and written by Urasawa and Takashi Nagasaki. The novel was awarded both the Orhan Kemal and Milliyet literary prizes. The novel is the story of three generations of a wealthy Istanbul family living in Nisantasi, Pamuk's own home district. His first novel Cevdet Bey and His Sons was published seven years later in 1982. At the age of 23 Pamuk decided to become a novelist, and giving up everything else retreated into his flat and began to write. He went on to graduate in journalism from Istanbul University, but never worked as a journalist. After graduating from the secular American Robert College in Istanbul, he studied architecture at Istanbul Technical University for three years, but abandoned the course when he gave up his ambition to become an architect and artist. As he writes in his autobiographical book Istanbul, from his childhood until the age of 22 he devoted himself largely to painting and dreamed of becoming an artist. Orhan Pamuk was born in Istanbul in 1952 and grew up in a large family similar to those which he describes in his novels Cevdet Bey and His Sons and The Black Book, in the wealthy westernised district of Nisantasi. |
